The PostcardA Poem by Melinda McQueenThe Postcard
It arrived in the mail yesterday, today she holds it in her hand. Depicting a sunset on a Hawaiian beach with footprints embedded in the sand.
Turning it over, she reads again his now familiar words. Her heart leaps within.
In a covenant handwriting, he expressed in a paragraph that he was thinking of her. In his words did she bask…
“Hello! I made it to Hawaii. It’s beautiful this time of year. The water is just right. Wish you were here!”
Letting a sigh deflate her lungs, she holds the postcard to her chest. Though she too, wishes she were there, she’ll never tell, not on her day best.
She would love to go to Hawaii. To feel the sand beneath her feet, and to have the water lap around her. But more so, she wishes he were her retreat.
Opening her desk drawer, she tosses it in with the rest. He was always her adventure; the postcards said it best.
