I Have Cerebral Palsy

I Have Cerebral Palsy

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

Tight is the road,

Narrow is the mold.

A straight shot to an unknown end,

Yet, very clear as to where I finish.

My limbs know

Limited control.

Yes, “limited” is the word’s key…

I have Cerebral Palsy.

I know full-well how powerful the brain,

How much it can refrain.

For no matter how much I tell it to do what I wish,

It refuses to listen.

It may seem I’m here in chains

While the rest of the world reigns.

I’m here dreaming to be free

I have Cerebral Palsy.

My speech fails me,

My words come out as that of a turbulent sea.

Having to try hard to be heard,

I sometimes feel absurd.

Someday before God I’ll stand

When He takes my hand.

So I write these words

As my powerful sword.

I have Cerebral Palsy…

But Cerebral Palsy does not have me.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Be blessed.
Magnificent Melinda! The indomitable human spirit supported by unshakeable faith - reminded me of the poem 'footsteps', however from a different POV. The final couplet - defiance in the face of adversity and a refusal to let a condition define us.
Brilliant dear poet.

Melinda, this is a powerful poem! I love that you stand firm against the disease, that limits your actions. It has not however, limited your heart! You have incredible faith and this is a testimony to how much you can do! I have a friend from another site that also has CP, and he is now limited in his writes and replies, but he still visits up, and responds as he's able. Sometimes its just a smile on my page, but that is okay. It means he's still doing what he loves. I see in you the same determination, and we will all meet death in the end. There is no difference there in you and others, perhaps you are a bit luckier than most because you realize how precious time is. It takes some people decades to figure it out if they ever do, and they miss the best things in life. Hug those nieces and do the things that you love when you can. That's beating the CP. Man this is one powerful amazingly inspirational piece Melinda... my favorite! "I have Cerebral Palsy... but Cerebral Palsy does not have me." Those are truly strong words and it takes a strong woman to get to the right mind set to understand that it does no have you. Amazing write... glad to be able to read it :)

good for you
It is not what you cannot do, it is what you can do and what you will do.
It is not what you want to achieve, it is what you will achieve and what you will be thankful for.
We all lack in some way. Many of us are never thankful for what we have.
