Permanent

A Poem by Pippa Stoneheart
"

Alzheimer's disease is more than just that. It swallows a whole lot more than just good memories.

"

I treasure each sight of you sleeping

And recall when you tucked me in

Still, I hear your lullabies

While on the chenille blanket, I lie

Each laugh you make, I cherish

For soon those giggles shall perish

Your chortle is music to my ear

No one chuckles like grandma, dear

And I wake up at sunrise

Half the bed’s made, no one at my side

And downstairs I run to see you

Prepare breakfast for us two

But these have turned to memories

All those we’ve shared, I reminisce

And it seems one’s time is borrowed

Now, I face an episode of sorrow

Down at you, I smile

I see you’ve aged, except the eye

Whose twinkle never fades

You’ll never know what really changed

But when I asked you “Who am I?”

You fought a grin and forced a sigh

I’d rather you didn’t hear

But your answer was something I couldn’t bear

Forgotten was the life you lived with me

Forgotten were the days of glee

My face, my voice, my name you can forget

But my love for you is permanent

I hope your Grandmother is Ok. The gentle and kind people we need to make a good life. They teach us to be kind and know what love should be. A powerful poem. I believe we must return the love back. Life is a journey of give and take. A very good ending to a excellent poem.

I am so sorry for the bad news you have received & for the pain this poem
tells me you are enduring. Very well said, A perfect portrait of a disease
that takes people slowly beyond your reach. Very cruel. A fine piece of
work that I wish wasn't true. Best to you.
