Atonement

Atonement

A Poem by Tayla Li
"

First poem I've written in almost a year...

"

Why do you dance on the edge of my senses,

tease me with a glimpse of your presence

and vanish back into the wind?

You keep me earth bound,

while you float out there with celestial beings,

offer to take me to extraordinary heights,

but never allow my feet to leave the ground.

You drive me to insanity in my pursuit of you,

and I plead my case in a court of internal conflict,

where I am both defendant and plaintiff,

as you sit back and watch from the jury box.

Will you testify in my defense,

or seek to prosecute me?

Which do you see me as -

a murderer

or a victim?

It was you who left me stranded

on an isle of self-depravation,

wanting you,

needing you,

and you were nowhere to be found.

I blame myself for driving you away,

not appreciating you for what you were worth,

and cursing you whenever I felt you didn't live up to

your full potential.

But you're no saint either;

you were there only when it was convenient for you,

even on nights I stayed up crying for you,

you never saw fit to console me.

And you were jealous,

oh, were you jealous,

when I decided I wanted to take time

to do other things,

get out and explore my options.

It was then that you left me,

returning just to remind me of what I lost

due to my own indecisiveness

and fear of committment.

I wonder if you're thinking of me as I write this,

because I swear I feel your hand guiding mine,

a touch of salvation I've been seeking for so long.

I wonder if you've forgiven me,

because I know that I was wrong

and I want to make it up to you.

This is my redemption song,

my last chance to prove that I will never take you for granted,

that I will honor and praise you,

value you for what you are,

and not what I want you to be.

Say that you forgive me,

and that we can go back

to the days when we were at our best.

Please say you'll come back,

that you won't continue to torment me

with memories of what used to be.

I need you;

need you to soothe me with sweet words

of solace,

that we'll elevate

to the heights of literary royalty

that we sought since the first day

I picked up a pen

and gave you release.

I need you;

need you to promise me

you'll bless me with eloquence

and profundity,

and I will submit myself entirely to you.

There will be no other,

I will be yours completely

if you'll simply return to me,

poetry.

Be completely honest. I haven't written in a very long, so I'm not expecting it to be gold.

Ha!! This was cute. I was SOOOOO caught up in the "guy" that I had an entirely different review thought out. I LOVE this. It's so full of character and wanting for those perfect words. Wonderful clarity and word choices. Bravo to you! After a year, I'd say you're not too rusty at all. :)
