Twins who finally get a taste of what the other twins life is like. "Walking in another person's shoes" is more precise!
“Hi, I’m Angel Roberts. I’m your typical 16
year old teenager. I have a twin sister Angela. People think just because my
name’s “Angel” I’m one but me and my sister are complete opposites. She plays
piano, is a nerd and has zero fun where as I play bass guitar, I’m popular at
school and I’m the hottest cheerleader in my squad. Life couldn’t be more
amazing for me…..UNTIL something strange happens…”
It was Spring break and all
hell was breaking loose at West Valley High. You could hear the buzzing of
students from miles away. “I can’t wait for Jake’s party tonight” said Angel to
her friend Chloe in the bathroom fixing their make-up. “Yeah me too, and I
heard EVERYONE’S invited” said Chloe applying her lipstick. Angel’s face and
excitement suddenly changed then she said “Angela too? Who knows what she’s
going to do. OR WEAR, I can’t risk it. I have to talk to her” as she finished
her sentence Angela walked in. They looked even more identical standing next to
each other, the resemblance was unbearable but the only thing that set them
apart were their outfits. Angel had make-up on, was wearing hoops with her long
blond hair tied back, a short denim dress and black heels, Angela on the other
hand was wearing a longer version of Angels dress, her hair was dirty blond
with no highlights and she only had pale lip gloss on and black flats. So you
could defiantly tell them apart. The only thing Angela had were her pearly
white teeth, straight and super shiny but Angel sadly had braces. She changed
the colours to match her outfits and people didn’t like her less with them on.
“I have to ride with you
today, my car’s being repaired” said Angela with a little excitement in her
voice. “The girls and I are going shopping, maybe we can get you something
better then that” said Angel in disgust.
Angela ran out and left
Angel and her friends laughing and cheering on.
Later Angel and her friends
Chloe, Carol, Charlotte and Kayla were cruising down the busy streets of New
York singing their favourite songs with the roof down. Poor Angela had to sit
through their shouting and screaming the whole ride there. “No the pink one
looks better on you” said Kayla as the girls were trying on dresses at a fancy
Boutique “No, the blue dress suits you better and besides it matches you eyes”
said Chloe. “I’ll just get both of them. I can’t wait for tonight!” Angel said
then they all jumped up and down in delight. Angela was sitting at the back of
all the mayhem and foolishness. “Honey, I must say 2 hours of shopping sure can
be hard work” said Angel as they sat down at a Café for Latté’s and doughnuts.
“Angel, we need to be home by 8, it’s already 7” said Angela. Everyone looked
at her then at Angel as if expecting her to answer for her sister but she just
smiled away at her phone. Next the girls did their hair which took another
hour. “Angel, dad just asked where we are. What should I tell him?” Angela
asked when she was finally alone with her sister, who just said “Don’t worry,
we won’t miss curfew” but Angela was Panicking inside. She found it hard to
trust her sister in situations like this but she didn’t have any say in this
because she was only hitching a ride.
Surprisingly Angela and
Angel didn’t miss their curfew “Evening daddy” said Angel kissing and hugging
her dad who was reading the newspaper. At home, Angel actually lived up to her
name and she secretly had her parents eating out of her hand. “Hello cupcake,
oh Kayla’s mom called earlier and asked if you were still coming over” said Mr
Roberts. Another surprising thing about Angel was that she was a great liar and
could completely manipulate anyone into doing anything she wants so in other
words she was a spoilt brat. “Okay, I’ll go say hi to mom before I pack” said
Angel rushing off to her room but Angela was hot on her trail.
“Wow, you deserve an Oscar
hey. The way you lie to get what you want” she said standing on the doorway but
Angel wasn’t really paying attention she just said “Yeah yeah, go knit a
blanket or something” Angela just walked away. Her sister left a few minutes
after that. “Hey honey!!” shouted Kayla as she greeted Angela at the door. They
hugged and went inside. “My mom isn’t home, she’ll be back tomorrow morning so
we have the whole house to ourselves” said Kayla excitedly. Chloe and Charlotte
soon joined in on the fun. “So, we have to get ready for the party girls and
make sure we arrive dressed to flirt” said Angel. While they were getting
ready, Kayla got her moms bottle of fine white wine and they got a little
tipsy. After that they got ready and left at 10.
“What are you doing here?”
Angel said running into her sister at the party, “I ASKED dad unlike you. He
said he’ll fetch me in an hour” Angela said with a little attitude. “Whatever
freak, just make sure you don’t step on my toes” Angel said then she walked
away leaving her sister standing there. Angel and her friends hit the dance
floor and went wild. They were dancing, taking shots and having a blast whereas
Angela was just there to socialize and shortly left. The minute her sister left
Angel went even crazier kissing guys AND girls and dropping it lower then it
should’ve been dropped. At the end of the night Mike (Angela’s not so official
boyfriend) was hitting on Angel and he ended up dropping them off at Kayla’s
house. “Don’t I get a kiss?” he said when they were standing on the doorstep
“No, I may not like my sister but we don’t date the other persons ex or
boyfriend or what the hell you guys are. You’re a really-” Angel’s sentence was
stopped by Mikes lips on hers. He held her in his big arms. The weird part was
that Angel didn’t pull away until the very end then proceeded her sentence
“Nice guy and a wonderful kisser. Bye” she wobbled her way inside and the girls
called it a night.
“Morning Mammy” said Kayla handing Angel a cup
of coffee the following morning. Angel wasn’t really a morning person, her hair
and make-up were a complete mess.
“I need more than a cup of coffee to get me
back to my old self” she said downing the whole steaming cup and placing it neatly
on the counter. “Well, my mom said we can come over for mane’s and massages
later” said Charlotte who was in a good mood. “Okay, just give me a minute”
said Angel. In an hour she was dressed and ready to go, not even a hint that
she was completely wasted the night before.
At the spa the girls got
facials, their nails done and got massages too. They spoke about the night
before, about how it was fun and their wild habits.
“Next time, I’ll probably think twice before
drinking that much” said Chloe then there was a short silence followed by
uncontrollable laughter. After the spa they got lunch and Angel went to a
fortune teller. She sat on the chair and a big lady with loads of glitter and
feathers came towards her but her smile slowly faded when she said “Mama
Millard don’t speak to one half of a whole. Be gone with you incomplete soul”
then she disappeared behind the curtains. Angel was confused and furious. Her
sister then walked in and sat next to her and whispered under her breath “What
am I doing here?” then the fortune teller walked back in and this time she was
smiling then said “There child, now you are complete. Now I can start now what
can Mamma Millard do for you children today?” “Well, I want to know if there’s
any money in my future. Boys and if any of my friends will stay loyal” said
Angel chewing her gum in the middle of each word. Angela shyly said “I want to
see what the future holds for me, school work and if I’ll ever find true love” with
that said she gave Angel a mean look as if she knew about her kiss with Mike
the night before. “I will not do what you want, I will tell what’ll happen for
your future my kids and let me tell you, it involves a lot of changes that one
or maybe both of you won’t like” said
Mamma Millard. She looked into her crystal ball and continued “Something life
changing will happen to you on the 15th of September on a full moon.
An outer body experience that’ll allow both of you to see life in the other
persons eyes” Angel was fully focused and she even almost chocked on her gum.
“That’s our birthday, that’s when the life
changing green full moon accurse” said Angela “Yes brainy half, something very
life changing.” Said Mamma Millard. She basically told them they had to change
their ways in order to stop the dangers of the Green full moon. “Yeah well, my
star sign said I should change my ways or I’ll change myself” said Angel very
confused “Yes, you are the problem. If one half of a whole doesn’t feel wanted
then something bad is going to happen” said Mamma Millard staring at Angela.
Soon after that they left separately.
At Kayla’s the girls were
touching up the house before her moms’ arrival. “I have to tell you guys
something. I’m going to Spain next week so I won’t be here for your birthday
bash Ang” said Charlotte sounding very sad “Yeah me too, my mom said I should
go to Summer school so I won’t be here. Sorry honey” said Chloe. Kayla was
leaving with her mom the following day to go to Australia for an exhibition
that could boost her career in Art. Angel was hurt but then she remembered what
Mamma Millard said earlier “you’ll be forced to spend time with family when the
people you value the most decide to go their own ways” her voice echoed in
Angel’s head then her whole body went numb. “Hey Ang, we can go watch a movie
before I go” said Kayla interrupting Angel’s thoughts. She suddenly felt cold
and scared of the chills running down her spine.
Angel decided to stay at
home for some reason and to be honest she didn’t remember coming home and
falling asleep. “Hey twins!” shouted Jason in Angel’s ear waking her up
instantly. Jason was their older brother and he came back from his internship
in Africa. Angel soon welcomed her brother with a big hug and said “Oh my gosh,
you’re back dude. I missed you so much” Angel always felt that somehow Jason
and her were the twins and Angela was the other sibling but she never actually
said that to her face or in front of her parents. “Well, I wanted to pop by and
plus I heard the waves here this summer are insane “said Jason.
That evening the whole
family sat around the dinner table and it was a surprising delight. All the
happiness in Angel’s face wasn’t fake she, she was genuinely having a good time
with her family but then she remembered what else Mamma Millard said “The only
thing you fall back on will turn from you so beware” she spent the rest of dinner thinking about what it meant. Angel
and Angela washed the dishes and it wasn’t as awkward. “So did you have fun at
your little party?” Angela asked trying to make conversation but she was a
little mad and Angel could sense it when she said “I’m sorry, I told Mike that
I didn’t like him. He kissed me” “It’s fine, I’m just glad you’re going to get
what’s coming for you. Goodnight sis” Angela said whipping the last bowl then
she left the room leaving Angel standing there speechless.
She then went to her room
and slammed the door behind her then she did something she didn’t do very
often...cry. “Hey hey, what’s wrong honey?” said Jason when he saw his little
sister cry. He held her closely and let her cry in his shoulder. When she was
finally done she looked up and she blurted out “Angela hates me” in tears she
sobbed even louder. Their parents usually didn’t interfere in their kid’s drama
so they were fast asleep while Angel was crying. “Hey listen, she doesn’t hate
you. She just wants you to love and respect her since you guys are equal. Like
two halves of a whole” Jason said. Angel remembered what Mamma Millard said
when she first saw her and how confused Angela was when she got there. Angel
looked up at her brother and said “I love you bro, I just wish I wasn’t a twin”
that very moment the house clock struck 12 and made a huge sound. Jason held
Angel even tighter when he saw the fear in her eyes. “I love you too, I think
you should sleep it off” he said kissing his sister goodnight then he went to
his own room. That evening Angel had a nightmare that she couldn’t wake up
from. She was drowning and Angela had a boat but she didn’t help her, instead
she faded into the sea shouting “I’m not your twin anymore. You got what you
wanted Angel, be happy now”
The next morning felt
different for Angel, she woke up and looked out the window and saw a new house
across the street and a girl with dirty blond hair, about the same height as her
and a really cute outfit on. Angel couldn’t shake the feeling that the girl
looked a little familiar. Like she’d seen her before. The girl turned around
and to her surprise she looked exactly like her! It was Angela! She was holding
a box from a car to the car. Angel was so confused, she rushed over to the new
house still in her pyjamas and said “Angela I’m sorry ,I didn’t mean to hurt
your feelings” the girl seemed confused and said “Hi, do I know you?” then she
walked away leaving Angel alone to figure it all out on her own. When she went
back home she saw a lot of weird things like Angela’s pictures were missing
from the family photos and her room was now Jason’s. She ran to her moms office
and said in between breathes “Where’s Angela, why is she moving in next door
and why does she act like she doesn’t know me?” Angel felt really emotional
that moment but then she remembered Mamma Millard’s words to her “All the
happiness in your life will vanish. The one thing you depend on will change” as
she turned to face the mirror in the hallway what she saw wasn’t her. She was
now a brunette and had no braces and a face full of zits and pimples.
“Something I depended on” was what she whispered as she touched her oily skin.
She quickly took her car and dashed off to the fortune teller, tears in her
eyes and a combination of anger and sadness filled her heart. She ran as fast
as her little legs carried her but when she reached the store it was gone! It
was like it vanished in mid-air. She stood there completely shocked and all she
managed to say was “What” her head was filled with a bunch of unanswered
questions and confusion. Just as she was about to go back to bed her brother
walked in with a smile on his face and said “I made you breakfast sis” Angel
jumped into his arms and sobbed “She’s gone bro, she doesn’t remember me at all
and it’s all my fault” Jason took a deep breath and said calmly “Ang, just
because Angela looks like you doesn’t mean she’s your twin. Now, we’ve been
through this for almost 3 weeks” “But I’m not crazy, she’s my twin, our sister.
I’m not going crazy!” said Angel sounding a little crazy. “Maybe we should up
the dose on those sleeping pills okay. I’ll bring them to you while you lay
down for a while okay”
Jason said slowly letting go
of his sister who was not budging but he forced himself out and left.
A few minutes later Angel
made her way downstairs and saw Angela sitting in the living room with another
lady and her mom who said “Oh, this is my daughter Angel. She’s been a little
bit strange lately but I’m sure she’ll show Angela around” Angel just stood
there staring at the person who was supposed to be her twin sister “Hey, I’m
Angela nice to meet you” Angela said trying to shake Angels hand but she
refused and said “We met earlier, please excuse me” Angel ran out of the room
to the kitchen. She couldn’t catch her breath, she thought about how she could
change what she said, how she treated her sister and how she could’ve made
things right with her but now she was gone. Then Angel remembered what Mamma
Millard said “Green Moon will be life changing for the both of you. It’s up to
you if you want to change or not but sometimes that change might be for the
better or for the worst”
Then she knew exactly what
to do. After her guests left she changed into clean clothes and went to her
room and started planning. Her birthday was tomorrow so she had to find a way
to convince her sister that she’s HER SISTER. The first thing she did was
spread the word about her party, get everything ready. All she had to do was
find a way to invite Angela over. Angel searched through her things to find a
necklace she was planning on giving Angela on their birthday (While they were
twins) then went across the road. As she knocked on the door she felt really
dizzy and very nervous. The door swung open and Angela stood there with her
pearly whites and said “Hey Angel, how are you?” Angel couldn’t help but miss
her even more. She wanted to hug and squeeze her and tell her how much she
loved and her but she couldn’t do that since Angela didn’t remember her. She
just stood there with a reassuring smile “Hey, I’m hosting a party tomorrow
night and I was wondering if you’d like to come” Angel managed to choke out.
Angela smiled back and said
“Sure, I’ll be there. Hey what do you have there?” she asked pointing at the
box Angel had in her hands. “Oh. This is for you. Sorry for freaking out
earlier and welcome to the neighbourhood” Angel said handing the box to Angela
who opened the box and almost started to cry when she said “Oh my gosh Ang,
this is beautiful. I really love it” Angela gave Angel a big hug. In those few
seconds Angel felt like crying. “It was nothing, just a little something to say
thank you. Hey I heard it’s your birthday too tomorrow” Angel said trying to stop
the tears “Yeah, 17th birthday. Can’t wait. I bought this pretty
skirt yesterday. Maybe I can wear it at your party” said Angela placing the
necklace on her neck, and then admiring it in her hand. “Yeah sure, well see
you later” said Angel then she ran off and didn’t even give Angela the chance
to say goodbye.
Jason opened Angela’s
bedroom door and said “I came with lunch” Angel couldn’t help but smile then
she said “thank you bro, can you please pick up the cake tomorrow
morning?” Angel said sitting next to her
brother on her bed who said “Sure, I’m glad you’re feeling okay Kiddo” Jason
then kissed his sister on the cheek and left. Angel ordered Angela’s favourite
cake, food and had the decorations in Angela’s favourite colours. That evening
Angel slept like a baby.
During the party the
following everything was going well, Angel was wearing a pink dress and had a
crown that said “It’s my birthday too” Angela had one when they were kids that
said “It’s my birthday” but Angel couldn’t find it so she could give it to her.
“Hey birthday girl” she said greeting her with a warm hug “Hi, happy birthday”
said Angela handing Angel a familiar looking box. She’d seen the box when she
was shopping with her friends. When she opened it she found a charm bracelet
with the initials AR. “Oh wow, this is beautiful Angela, thank you” they hugged
then Angel saw that Angela was wearing the necklace. Her heart melted as Angela
grabbed her and asked to dance… Everything was running smoothly and Angela was enjoying
herself until that scary clock sound went on again but this time Angel slowly
closed her eyes and a tear went down her cheek.
When she finally opened them
she found herself in front of the store again but this time it was open. She
came in, sat down and waited for Mamma Millard. She made her way to the front
and said to Angel “Now child, I hope you learnt your lesson” Angel nodded “Do
you want your other half back or do you want to remain one whole alone?” Mamma
Millard asked now holding Angels sweaty palms. “I want my other half back “she
said eagerly then she closed her eyes again. This time when she opened them
again she was back at the party and Angela ran to her and said “Thanks for the
best surprise party sis. I love you” then gave her sister a big hug “I love you
too Ang” said Angela.
The story is good. The basics is already there, flow, inspiration and the characters. The only suggestion I would make is a grammatical one. Note spaces, pauses and new sentences. Your story seems to just flow from one scene to another and you do not leave space for the reader to become aware that they are in a new scene. For example in the beginning when Angel leaves for the party, leave a space and start the scene at her girlfriends line in the next line. That leaves no space for confusion as to whats happening now in your story. Also mark who is talking properly by using different lines for each, example 'blah bla blah" said Clair, new space "that's true said Monica.
With these changes your story would have a more understandable flow and I dare say you could get a lot of reads, you've got the talent!
