New Normal: Ends in Tiers

New Normal: Ends in Tiers

A Poem by Phill Oz O'fee
"

Optimist...

"

New Normal: Ends in Tiers

Window watching wintery skies

Melancholy feelings drift quickly

Sailing upon billows of respire fog

On a matt grey dyed background

A wren and robin casually dance

Atop entwined hedgerow highway

Distracting me with their character

And giving me my day’s first smile

I knew my reality would end in tiers

The instant complacency appeared

With freedoms restrictively curtailed

Masquerading as a greater good

Now a microparticles war begins

Too late for previously shed tears

Many forlornly left to grieve alone

In another darkest hour moment

I used to rise early every morning

Anticipating an adventurous future

Now a dismal foreboding prospect

Dampens inner core enthusiasms

Even so I comfort in the knowledge

Loneliness is also mutual in others

Shared at ominous times like these

Each with opportunity to reach out

Optimism is the key for succeeding

Giving confident structure to hope

So let our collective consciousness

Join positively together for victory

Window watching is a perfect distraction for conditions that are dark, lonely, scary, vengeful. That's what the world is experiencing now; in America at present we have the highest number of pandemic cases and deaths, and to top it off a civil war brewing, following an insurrection. We're all suffering, and though hope may be on the horizon, we must face more darkness and loneliness before hope can be realized. I find very few people now who are optimistic, but that should be our goal. Well written and relevant Phil.

Window watching, lovely!

I especially love the lines about the wren and the robin and the clever use of "end in tiers"

A wren and robin casually dance
Atop entwined hedgerow highway

Your poem seems to tend toward pessimism about the new normal & I agree. I see people being optimistic now that we've got vaccines, but it's hard not to wonder if some ferocious cat might be out of the bag, as far as the mutation of destructive germs/viruses in general. I agree that optimism is the key to succeeding & so I'm trying to write in a positive bent about lots of things. Still, I find it mind-boggling to see the world going around in masks (something I never see in the wilderness where I live). To a certain extent, I feel like I'm watching a world that I'm not a part of . . . yet. I love reading vivid palpable poems like this becuz it helps me feel what others are feeling, since I'm untouched by this pandemic (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I am all for optimism in these troubled times; it's that rainbow of hope that I cling to as we await the end of this pandemic. You captured the mood of watching the world go by in isolation very well and your positivity in the poem's conclusion is inspiring to read. Victory shall be ours.....it just needs perseverance. Much enjoyed your poem, Phil! :)

It is indeed a lonely world we are currently living in. Love these phrases as they fall so effortlessly off the tongue. Sending warm thoughts to you.

loneliness, or solitude?
I like solitude and window watching, especially the little birds in winter foraging for food.
There are tiers to loneliness, but maybe it tests our strength of character, we have to count our blessings when we see a lone little bird out in the snow who is hungry .

Thank you for your kind review, Ashley - much appreciated my friend ... :-)
'an adventurous future" seems so far off right now.
I enjoy birds so much, but am jealous of them right now...their freedom, their songs
of gaiety...
when we are imprisoned by those very same windows...

Thank you, Jacob - not sure if I feel locked in or locked out from the world!
