4 mm

4 mm

A Poem by Phill Oz O'fee

4 mm

Tis’ the season...

Albeit of blessings mixed

Shadowy times of strewn hurts

With few sanctuary smiles

Isolated cared for loved ones

Rest delicate fragile fingertips

Just four millimetres distance

Opposite another’s on windowpane

You can look but you cannot touch

An unsatisfactory glazier consolation

Although better than nothing at all

Optimism being it is temporary

It is anticipated that very rapidly

An army of activated antigen soldiers

Will warfare against adversary virus

Counterattacking to destroy said foe

Sadly many victims have succumbed

And those affected by loss are broken

So this is now poignantly the occasion

To put aside differences and support

Tis’ the season...

To maintain bonhomie and optimism

To pray and hope for deliverance

And be our brother’s keepers

I am impressed with the way you hone in on the big difference, that 4 mm separation . . . a brilliant symbol to represent all kinds of social distancing & isolation & mandatory restrictions that go well beyond this scene in your poem where two people are separated by thick glass. This is the meaning of painting a specific scene in words that speaks for a much larger reality. And in this case, it's a reality that many are hurting or fuming about, which seems to go on & on as we wonder if current vaccines will protect against new strains (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Gee
Am glad that my old mum passed before Covid reared it’s ugly head as it would, as sure as eggs are eggs, have killed her by either isolation or the disease itself.
Wrote a similar piece but with much less detail( and 2mm more added onto the thickness).
Hope you are keeping well.

Sorry to hear of your loss - thank you for reading and words of comfort - :-)
it is quite unsatisfactory....to look but not be able to touch.

too much of this with the current situation...I hope we hate it enough that once we are allowed to touch again,
we will, and we will touch our enemies as well as our friends...open our hearts...
show some empathy and understanding...
please, we must.

Thank you Jacob - your poignant words are shared by many - be safe and well my friend. :-)
A hard world. My daughter, a nurse. Had the virus twice. I took care of her and she is fine. Still young and strong. I am praying for better days. My Michigan is struggling. Thank you my friend for sharing the powerful and worthwhile thoughts.

You are welcome my friend.
Despite the loss of so many, and the grief, we have some light at the end of the tunnel. That is something to be optimistic about. I too have my mum in a nursing home and know full well the 4mm of glass, when you can look, but not touch and neither can you hear well either. We did manage to smile. Poignant words Phill. Sometimes I wonder whether I will ever hug my mum again.
