I've been in this situation multiple times. Unfortunately, I lost them both because they eventually got better, but turned against me in the making. It was a sad situation, but I think it was all for the better. In the meanwhile, they had me playing mediator, which just made my life a wreck. I love this, and I truly think everybody should read what you have to write.

yes, it's unfortunate when you have to be a referee for friends...you can't really pick sides out of fear of losing one or the other.
