Self-Forgiveness

Self-Forgiveness

A Poem by Phill Oz O'fee
"

Sometimes... the hardest thing to do...

"

Self-Forgiveness

What is this

Shadowy suffering

Weighing down

My shaking spirit

Ushering dark

Dire disturbed dreams

Screaming me

To cold awakening

A broken anchor

Embedded in bedrock

Keeping me

From moving on

Many questions

I ask myself

By self-examination

Of truths and lies

Searching crossroads

Of my misguided trails

And finding pathways

Lead just too now

On my knees

Hugging the ground

Waiting despairingly

For enlightenment

Then a consciousness

Gives answer simply

To expose this anguish

And naming it...

‘Guilt’

It seems like I've been clicking on your short poems lately so I'm glad to find this one in my reading library, becuz I love it when your magic goes on & on (even tho your haiku/senryu is well-stated). I remember spending the first half of my life being dragged down by guilt & your message describes the sensations poignantly. I love the way your poem starts out seemingly with vigor & precision, then it dwindles as the stanzas go by, as if weighed down by sheer guilt, it feels like each line has to be squeezed out toward the end! I don't know how you do that, but it feels dramatic! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

A point of interest that relates to your piece.

In Anglo-Latin, the term for "one who commits suicide" was felo-de-se, literally "one guilty concerning himself."

The imagery of verse 3 explains why we engage in guilt feelings even if we have never done anything really evil. The past is our main reference to who we are; without it there is nothing there. Our emotional self prefers an anchor, even an unpleasant one, to the void.

Most people find it difficult to forgive themselves. Much easier to forgive others. An accomplished write Phill. Third stanza especially strong and visual. Well done.
