The ArcherA Poem by Phill Oz O'feeHou Yi, a mythical figure of Chinese origin;the Chinese deity of archery. The Archer When commanded by Jade Emperor Each solar brother would take his turn Encircling earth in living warmth
They were mischievous in nature And so in spiteful disobedience Together flew blisteringly the circuit
Suffering citizens viewed failing crops Rivers flowed with boiling water All fell to their knees in prayer
Hou Yi heard their sorrowful appeals Thus taking arrow shot down nine And left one all alone to witness
And so the earth was saved By accomplished toxophilite’s bow His name then honoured evermore
His archery skills become folk lore The champion’s activity continued By fighting off a cruel wind-monster
Later shot a malicious water spirit Straight through its evil mystic eye Making a truce by marring his daughter
Bravery was shared with modesty His methods based on subtle tact
