Smooth NightsA Poem by Phillip WolkeA bar, some drinks and kisses and conversation and...The scene opens up like a door to a different world, Glasses of wine clinking and cheers all while listening, The bass walks the line and the guitar croons and sighs, Just another night here at the jazz club. The manager looks on at the musicians so high, The music is a drug so that the crowd can get by, After a long day's work you need to relax and kick back, For some a romantic dinner with kisses for snacks, For some lone wolves they just sit back and breath, In and out goes the cigarette smoke while behind the back door some workers take a toke, Between the table a waiter weaves. It's full of silent conversations over whiskeys and good sensations, All the customers know their drinks of choice and feel the lo-fi vibe while the instruments converse. There's a couple at a table mutually teasing, She squeezes, hook line and sinker and now we know their night's end, A teaser, Another man spaces out thinking about a tearjerker, takes a drink, Not much to do but lose yourself in the music, The bartender looks on, loving his life for the tips and good song, Long gone are the days he spent in a haze, No longer an addict to his vice he enjoys the game of prediction, you can't guess twice. What's their choice drink? He guesses and never misses, With precision like a missile, makes it to perfection for the mister or missus. Always respectful, he's a man of good health, As he watches the onlookers while they zone out and revels in his wealth. © 2023 Phillip WolkeReviews
