A Poem by C. Michael Kirre

Once it was us against the world

Sticks against dragons

Back to back

Swords pointing out

We grew up

Fell in love

Got married

Then a dragon attacked you

Invisible it burned you

Inside you

The only place were we could not go

The place were we had no defence

Outside our reach

It burned my maiden

It burned our village

Love is no shield against cancer

Love was all we had

And it was strong

But it was never enough

Now I must cover my own back
