Devastation by Domination

Devastation by Domination

A Poem by Phibby Venable

There are obscure ways to slap a soul
and tiny ways to pretend
it was an accident
I wish I could forget the cruelty
of your words and the way
you justified your acts
with false accusations
against your family
If I could avoid his oppositional
hold and touch truth
somewhere in the confines
of who you used to be
I would pin a pure heart back
where the present one lingers
But you have known yourself longer
than this poem can ever know you
It is written now and today
it can only whisper sorrow
but I am shouting
He slapped your soul!
I shout the consequences
and beg you to find balance
and ignore the barbs
he sharpened with a prison file
to rub under your skin
black mold that never
quite stops returning
Alienated from family and friends
he dug a fertile field in the first days
whispered injustices done to you
pretending he thought we thought
you a fool, taking you far away
and bouncing you with disrespect
until you could only swallow
the hard lies he fed you
and you could only blame
people you could no longer see
not the domination and insanity
of his insatiable need
always, to control you.

"There are obscure ways to slap a soul
and tiny ways to pretend
it was an accident" you had me immediately. This is a piece that means so much to me. Indignant, yet seemingly helpless to reach a sibling, a friend, a child. Watching the train wreck, arms exhausted from waving warnings, shut out, afraid of the outcome. This is another great work.

A very strong, valid, and thought full work.

Those with esteem issues will use controlling of others as a way to gain some false sense of pride.

Right now the lyrics of Papa Roach are in my head "Does it run in your blood to betray the ones you love."

Another fantastic poem

This is a sensational poem that leads to a fantastic ending. The phrase “the hard lies” is fantastic, such a play on the normal, “hard truths” that vividly shows the manipulation. The characterisation is superb, you reveal to the reader so finely the relationship’s dynamics, the donimination of this man. His manipulative nature is shown in a superlative way in these words:

ignore the barbs
he sharpened with a prison file
to rub under your skin
black mold that never
quite stops returning
Alienated from family and friends
he dug a fertile field in the first days
whispered injustices done to you
