new girl

new girl

A Poem by Phibby Venable

She breaks through the noon sun from the trees
where she was invisible to our conversation -
but she heard - that's what she says, that she heard
everything we said!
We protest, wide eyed with guilt and angry
at being caught, calling her a spy to what we spoke
and never meant for her to hear.
Don't stop now, she says, I'm listening.
But we are silent and aware
of the cherry bomb smoke of her eyes and we both know
about smoke being an introduction to fire
so I say nothing and Billy Mac says he is leaving
and not putting up with some nosy girl
that he never said a word about!
But I wanted to find out,
if she liked us.

I have no goddamn idea at all how you do this, but I'm grateful that you do do this.
