Retrospection

Retrospection

A Poem by Phibby Venable

Retrospection, how you ease
yourself beneath the bed's tight sheet
and linger in unwelcome thought
until I let you lecture loud,
the thousand, hopeless, times I failed

How well I know, hindsight is that

which loves to show up late at night
and that it is just what it is,
a sight behind, already dead,
and yet, it tries to live again
in sad and heavy could have beens
and in those, Oh, I wish I had!
It loves to bring regrets to bed.

Do you remember this or that?

Hard words and promises unkept?
Although I know the past is done,
and second chances will not come,
I still hear all the words that might,
have vanquished darkness with a light.
I think of all the things I missed,
when hindsight works the graveyard shift.

it's a good thing you came this way tonight...you never once failed being who you are...and the next time that voice shows up, ask it whose shoulders it thinks its riding on...

Those could have beens rage through this heart, like steaming locomotives. Loud and braying in the cold dark nights... The way you have made retrospection your bedfellow is a great addition to your fine works of wisdom.

So well expressed here..
