Edgar McEnnis
Edgar McEnnis was eighty two and lived alone,
a small house on a regular city street,
and he was fine until his lights went out,
due to a bill he had no funds to pay.
Edgar bundled up and planned to wait
until his monthly check arrived by mail,
but someone noted that he had no lights
and so the city sent officers out.
Edgar McEnnis was a private man,
he did not think the world owed him a thing,
but once folks had an inkling of his plight,
they rushed to do the perfect, humane thing.
They took him to a nursing home in town,
needless to say a struggle got him there,
and much against his will they put things right,
amid his protests and attempts to kill,
and since attempts to fight when being helped
were not considered normal by the town,
they had to bring out heavy, stiff restraints,
and so it was they bound and tied him down.
Now Edgar McEnnis sits in one small room
while the state hands out a huge amount of cash,
God forbid that they had simply paid his bill,
that would have taken too much common sense.
