Oh, tra la la la la la la
I wish to be a shiny star!
A perfect plum to form my lips
A juicy peach to form a cheek
and all the day the simple thought
of tra la la la la la la
And look at this exquisite sun
My skin an ivory tinged with bronze
My profile perfect on a horse
A singing voice, a perfect leg,
my dimples envied near and far!
Oh tra la la la la la la
No problems here, the sweetest things
sit on the table where I preen
A green grape cut to match my eyes
a golden pheasant made to sing
delicate boned with golden wings
Suitors in a wealthy state
that slip their cards beneath my plate
People that must fan themselves
when they discover that I'm about
A vanity and golden stool
A slender figure eating cake
And all the while a sweet, sweet smile!
Oh, tra la la la la la la...
The opening lines of this poem are remarkable. They really set the tone and put the reader in the frame of mind to move through the rest of the poem, trying to keep pace with the crisp words and imagery. And how perplexed must be the people who fan themselves when they find out you're all about a vanity and golden stool. So smile and eat your cake, this is a real tra la la poem.

There is a wonderful short story by Ring Lardner (and, damnit, the title escapes) where he captures the voice of the vain young rich girl so perfectly that, even eighty-plus years later, it rings true. This is Lardner, compressed to less than two dozen lines without losing that true voice.
I'm an old tra laer from way back. Nothing like barefooted tra laing down a dirt road on your way to the creek; chewing on a straw and tra la la la la la all the live long day. The innocence and the vanity of YOUTH! But it is sweet upon our lips; the taste of youth. Yes. A wonderful read.
