Harbor of a Quiet Mouth

Harbor of a Quiet Mouth

A Poem by Phibby Venable

Harbor of a Quiet Mouth

Watch how I fall into you, right side up & breathing
all those words I meant to say long ago,
but no one had the time to be still.
I hide in the harbor of your quiet mouth
and you listen & nod & search my eyes.
There is an avalanche of places I plan to go.
With you listening, I sail through a journey,
I lay out pictures of old roads, and mention
a long road trip down Route 1, and I take
sharp turns, and lean back to figure some sudden
stop I mean to make, and still, you are listening
and nodding in agreeable places,
until I pause and lean forward into my cupped hands.
Then we are both still, we are both watching
the harbor lights in the sky, and I see that I can move
in the dark like a butterfly, and still you are listening,
to all my whispered glidings.

The answer to Ed's question is, as he knows full well, "No." No one else can, in effect, write a novel in under twenty lines.

Love does mean listening to the one you adore and not just in their words but also what goes unsaid... for what the heart whispers is what keeps it beating for you... this is really excellent work.

this is love, the best kind, dreamy-eyed and fluttering through the dark on quiet wings, the kind we travel to with hopeful hearts beautiful words
