A woman of the world tipped your good hand.
You almost bought an island in the sand.
A shore of lips had opened to your own.
And one small angel shifted to your touch.
A flicker from the dark side of the moon.
You went into the city with a net,
and found nocturnal beauty in a bar.
You brought her to the country where you sat
surveying wheat and breaking golden corn.
And she said it was fun, it was a change.
She liked the flow of crops and drops of rain.
It seemed at first that she liked everything.
She threw her music through the plank board house.
She never locked the gate, the cows got out.
She hated dull brown eggs & plain rise flour,
she thought the pigs were precious till they went
off in the truck & came back packaged meat.
There was too much she could not understand.
And you were practical, a stoic man.
She was that odd bull that you found no good,
because he always wandered toward the woods.
You did not say a word the day she left.
You took your gun and shot the odd bull dead.
Wow...Ms Phibby. Pretty serious stuff adorned in our "mountain humour"....I love the way you always dance with underlying themes in your writing. Good stuff as usual. Thanks for sharing this!
I see the humor in this one. It is very clever. Brilliant, to be exact. But I see an underlying meaning here, that is anything but funny. All too often, we rush into relationships with what we think is the right person. Long before we actually get to know the person. Who they really are underneath whatever attracts us. Promises of eternal love, never this, always that...all of it empty in the end. After a little time in close quarters, quality time together, we find that we have more dislikes in that person than likes. Or as it is in many case, the person likes what they see, and thinks they will change things later. That is the most crucial mistake of all. A person has to accept what they see right then and there. For better or worse. Unfortunately, many hide what is the real person. We as a society, as people have a long way to go, before we get anywhere close to having it right. Thank you for sharing this Outstanding, and witty humorous piece, with such a meaningful undercurrent!
I had to laugh a bit at the wittiness of it... but like everything their are good and bad things, I guess it depends on if the things you like out weigh the things your dislike... still a very funny poem.
