all my kisses on the heavy stairs

all my kisses on the heavy stairs

A Poem by Phibby Venable

all my kisses on the heavy stairs

goodbyes wrestle from my lips.
they form a wave of kisses from my hand.
too often I have loitered on these steps,
and waded knee deep in some small regret,
to say goodbye more often than hello
till all my kisses on the heavy stairs
have hit a slamming door just as it closed,
and so I keep them till the next goodbye,
among the sound of footfalls kept inside.

Such a good write.... the 'wrestling' of goodbyes, the door slammed, the footfall kept outside... How very sad
