From the Windows

A Poem by Phibby Venable

From the Windows

Each day the universe crashes against the rocks
in waves, then sprays backward into a renewal.
It is all fine with me, I believe in the individual drops.
I believe in the storms of the sea & the howl of hope
that rages on against the wind.
We are all blasted & bracing against hurricane shutters.
God, It has been advised that I drop you
from the equation, but I am wary of bad counsel.
If the people can not see you from their windows,
I will place you in a poem, holding a perfect pear.
I will dress you in a toga for visibility
& paint your fingernails with lightning.
Bring me the flowers from the bottom of the sea!
Place your hand on a volcano & stop the hot flow.
The beauty of new dawns will not be enough.
Doubt floods the world & your people wait for rescue.
They wave white flags from the dampened roof.
We are caught up in the media & like a good show.

This is an Outstanding piece of Excellence! I love the imagery you have imparted to us. Smooth flow that has no hesitation whatsoever.

"& paint your fingernails with lightning."

I liked the whole piece, but this stood out. I love how you empowered Him with lightening on His fingertips! Reminding the reader of His unfathomable power, and wisdom. Bravo!!! You have captured nature, and God all in one piece. Pointing the way to see the Master of Masters, the one Creator of all. He is with us daily, if we only look to see Him. Thank you for sharing this Magnificent piece!

I would never have thought to draw a picture of Him. But you do it with such power and vision. I think you've held that hand and tugged on that ear a time or two before.

Symptomatic of so much. A very personal missive that transcends just being a series of personal words. You have such a graphic style that is at the same time subtle.

That was phenomenal... like putting complete trust where all the odds are stacked to taste the thrill of an unknown adventure. I really like it. Creative and captivating.

And in this world of twenty-four hour satellite-driven shouting, can there be a God if he is not dressed in a toga with lightning painted on his nails and not looking for all the world like the Lord a la Python's The Holy Grail? If He exists, why hasn't He seen fit to sit down with Larry King or Bill O' Reilly? Curiously, in this most modern of times, we'd prefer our God to be of the Old Testament variety, smiting villages whole or walking with us in the desert. Certainly, He would never manifest himself so subtly, in "a perfect pear" or "(t)he beauty of new dawns". This says a whole lot about faith and maybe even more about ourselves.
