A Sundial Sonnet

A Sundial Sonnet

A Poem by Phibby Venable

A Sundial Sonnet

A thousand rules stand on crutches
at my back door.
I forget why I need them.
I forget the circumstances of their arrival.
Just inside the door I am listening to records.
I forget why I bought them.
I remember why I need them.
I am performing a sundial dance.
Minutes fall from the face of it.
It is enamoured with shadows.
I offer the sundial a present.
I give it a thousand rules.
Now I can dance in peace.
Now I can hear words on records.

I suppose you can fuss that it isn't a sonnet per se, but you can't argue about how tight the piece is, spare but not sparse. I suppose the sloughing off the rules of the sonnet reflects the escape from the niggling concerns of other people's expectations and minor commandments. A whole lotta good stuff in a little space.

I always try and pretend that I can't see those rules standing there. waiting for me. It is good to dance. And I suppose, also good to offer the sundial a peace offering, a gift of rules.Turn the volume up. Let's dance.
