Dog Days of River Dancing
Sirius rages across the city,
in a sultry atmosphere of heat.
My friends that bought by the river
have grown appealing & today
I mark a cool descent down the riverbank
where the wet roots overhang into the water.
I slide down the cold branches & I can see
the waves of stagnant heat above,
but not with me & not on me,
only the cool mud & the river dance
that I carry inside.
I overthrow inhibitions & squeeze my toes
into the ooze between the rocks.
I step from stone to stone
to the beat of the water wind.
Tadpoles enter my dance floor as contestants.
Small fish leap to the top of their sky.
I release the clinging hot boundaries
of the sun above me.
A blue green aqua band beats
away the shore.
