A Poem by Phibby Venable

An Understanding

(brook)

I have only you to tell me
that the pink flamingo is
the color of things eaten.
You, with your far reaching
claims on the ordinary
that others may see,
but never observe.
You do not listen to a word
alone, but to the face & hands,
and to the eyes, stricken,
in a true conversation,
as the voice speaks gaily,
in a tongue held for treason.
