A Poem by Phibby Venable

One day out walking
I found a bird trapped
in the twig of a tree
dangling grey and dead
till I pulled him free
Too late, I told him,
to fly south
such a slim twig to capture
a song till it burst
Sometimes with the dark
as an ally
I call your name
like an omen
think how we are captured
by the smallest things
and stranded by the fragile
promises we break

Is it possible to have a novel in seventeen lines? In a sense, this is a highly condensed novel--the bird sets up the piece as the opening of a novel would, and it is just as much a fable or parable. Whatever it may be, it is concise and beautiful all at once, which is impossible for the general run-of-the-mill writer.

if I can help one fainting robin unto his nest again / I shall not live in vain.

You echo that other Emily/dig deeper into the thought so nicely.

I can't really explain why I like this so much, I just know I do. Very nicely written.
