At Play

A Poem by Phibby Venable

At Play

Sometimes I am a grenade girl,
so passionate, but malingering,
ticking off seconds to myself.
Or I am a cherry bomb.
A smoke screen of deliberate
intensity and watchfulness.
Like the cherry on this drink.
I don't drink this early.
I really don't drink at all,
but I am swayed that you placed
a cherry on top.
I like that you added a little extra.
Something pretty and sweet,
to hide the burn.

I like this alot.
I really enjoyed the part of
"I don't drink this early" that is cute.
Very well written and creative.

The beautiful images you set up: yourself, a bomb, full of intensity, with time fusing down to nothing. This is sophisticated, the cherry on top, what a great image. Then that heart-rendering end: 'to hide the burn.'
Powerful!

I love poems that are tight and packed with images like this one. Poems that have story. Especially like the image of clicking off the seconds to yourself. Have a lovely day. Brenda
