A Poem by Phibby Venable

Poet's Letter Home

Dear Mother, I am living in a mansion.
My servants fight for the right to serve me.
Each day I celebrate life with a bit of tequila.
I light my cigarette with the dollar bills
I keep near my chair. It is an easy chair.
I have one identical to it in my jet.
Everyone loves me for my personality alone.
I have a bookcase in my bathroom &
slow motion dancers in my gardens.
All of my food is flown in from the islands.
My horses win every race.
My greyhounds are infallible.
If you visit, I have prepared ten rooms for you
on the first floor.
There is no need to worry about me.
I have a wonderful life.
I have finally learned to control my imagination.

How I would have enjoyed being able to put my visiting mother in ten rooms of her own, a floor or two below me! Perhaps my 'relationship' with her would have been more positive.
This poem really rang a chord with me because of my own Life with Mother saga. But I'm implying that your lines mean to you what they mean to me - a silly assumption. Whatever they mean to you, they brought a wry smile to my face.

Well You seem to have made a goodly amount of progress so far, maybe if you had listened more instead of day dreaming!

Oh that I could control my imagination so well. I am working on it ... I'm an author and a poet now and I no longer fall victim to irrational fits of infatuation ... How am I doing?

I saw Emily liked this so much, I had to take a look.

Emily is right. That last line is the zinger! Well done.

ohhhhhhhh, I enjoyed the gentle tone. But that last line just blew it all out of the water. So clever. Just genius. Someday, maybe, I will learn to control my imagination, too.
