Humiliated Dachshund

Humiliated Dachshund

A Poem by Phibby Venable

Humiliated Dachshund

because he is dignified, he did not scream
when he dropped between the bed and the wall
overweight and upside down
on his back, four feet in the air
soundless and stiff as a board
too high brow to whine
so that I thought he was dead
when I pulled him up by his legs and
he kept his eyes open without a blink
but thank God, just before mouth to mouth
he shook himself
and slipped under the cover.
