the hooves of my horse

the hooves of my horse

A Poem by Phibby Venable

the hooves of my horse

the hooves of my horse on a sunny day
splash grass and search for byways
she has no fraud in her mane
of exploration
her ribs are fattened & sleek
her eyes are a pool of clarity
In the last days of summer
her coat curls & thickens
into a mat of wool beneath my feet
she has her nose to the ground
for the small bark of kindling
she crosses our field in a flesh
of rippled searching
the hooves of my horse on a sunny day
throw loose the pebbles wedged there
she kicks the air in a surrender
to passionate thought
once in a monotone of prayer
she cleared the high jump
in the lower pasture
today she is content
to sidestep the wildflowers

Listen, I don't want to sound unfriendly, but if you don't let at least one of the muses loose, so that some of the rest of us can ride our own ranges, I'm going to have to report you, to someone... I mean, let's not be selfish here. I don't want to be reduced to begging. It's not manly. By the way, consider this a request from a committee at the cafe, and a warning by some of us! We'll show you how to sidestep wild flowers! Ever hear of pushing up daises?

I'm laughing too much at Ed to leave a coherent review. It's the cold weather. Invite him in for a glass of something to warm him from the inside out. And don't forget your most bewitching smile. He won't be able to help himself. You'll be surprised how much friendlier he will be. ;)
