The Girls
Yesterday, the flame crackled out,
and it immobilized into a soft ash
All the birds flew in, near the chimney top,
as dogs calcified on their cold chains
I pulled up a chair near the window pane,
& with your eyes on me, I saw such odd things
where they hid inside, lying in your eyes
so many angry things, that with a careful smile
I turned from your gaze
to the outside,
where I saw a girl,
with a saddled ride
& a gypsy jumped, in a lip of red,
through the ice chips lying on a bed
A shy, loping girl, with a short stick,
shot a game of pool as her fingers twitched
All around the yard, the lone shadows came
Each of them unsure I would know their names
One played touch tag, the other hide & seek
One girl was hitching rides, the other rode a train
One in a red dress, held up a laughing hand,
another touched my heart, with her lonely stance
There in the multitude, standing on one foot
was a princess that, no prince ever touched
There a lovely song, in a lovely voice
and I knew the words, so I sang along,
then I turned to see, you looking back at me,
and I saw you think, nothing much at all
So I walked away, I walked out the door,
where I pulled a song from a sparrow's throat
& I reviewed the plans that a child wrote
a long time ago,
in a sparrow's throat.
