How Am I Doing?A Poem by Phibby Venable
How Am I Doing?
I am a small bud, nothing
really flowering at the moment.
In the pause of silence & dark
In the metamorphosis of hope,
that is me on the back step.
This morning I have risen early
to feed the stray cat that stays
a good distance away.
I like his suspicion & sharp stares
I like that he does not fling himself
into the hopes of a home
because in reality
I prefer the wild birds.
I prefer unchoked songs throated
through the high windows
of a dark blue morning.
I like the dazzle of sun striking
streak by streak through the trees
& I do not care if my face is open
or lined by exposure
I drop my radiant youth
in the grasses of the universe
I look upward & suppose God
has a busy day filled
with galactic moments.
I lift my wrist so that He may feel
the frailty of my pulse,
still drumming gratitude,
a hidden clock beating
into the implacable eyes
of Heaven.
