Turtle Traps

Turtle Traps

A Poem by Phibby Venable

Turtle Traps

..what did I want to say? nothing.
I want to finish this line & I
plan to gig out past High Rock
Step over that! damn..it's almost dark.
Look, I don't care about a frog
or a turtle's mouth, as far as that goes
they can keep breathing as they fry
& if you won't go, at least
don't hinder me, and yes, the moon
is full, nothing special, just a moon
and no, I don't see how
the river sleeps in a fog blanket
Don't talk crazy..do you see
my mosquito net..
Do you want to go or not?
You can carry the sack.

Look if anyone in these parts can find something in a full moon, it's you...this is a departure from your norm in terms of voice and perspective, and it's handled wonderfully. You do a fine job of creating a character, and you've captured the rhythms of speech perfectly. Awfully sure-footed for someone that's stepping out.

Poor turtles...
Do you really plan to eat them?
