So Now You Live

So Now You Live

A Poem by Phibby Venable

So Now You Live

So now you live like a lava rock
& you remember a flow, a rush,
more heat than brains & a hundred
things you might improve
But think nothing of that.
Let it all harden into the cast off,
into the shell you slip out of
At this moment the wind
is singing
At this moment the seas rise
deeply green & lightly blue
All around waits the whisper
of a celebration
I urge you from that crust of earth
where you have hidden
I promise you that the world sparkles
somewhere
even on the worst days
& I have a compass
built for two
It does not point in any direction
It is whirling like a globe
in an earthquake
on a stand.

Part exhortation, part sermon, part valediction...this is so tightly constructed, yet it is no academic set piece. It is the perfect early Spring /Easter piece; a clarion call to be reborn and truly live again. Inspirational without being cloying or maudlin, it is a wonderful, wonderful piece of writing.
