Love Song

Love Song

A Poem by Phibby Venable

Love Song

Love walks all over town in those big boots
Looking for a stomping ground
Listening for a breaking sound
Looking for a cracked shell
under the foot
of a giant.
Big boots slapping around
like a lost cause, I hear a train give
 a ticket to cry
Should have been a one night stand
Should have been the last one to fall for
a dream scene
& I was.
I wish I had a long night
& that I could fight back
but I keep finding pieces to hide.
I should have smashed the hope chest
with the fake lace
& the wooden top
that covered the lies
& your eyes
always lie.

The first line is perhaps the finest single set-up of a poem I've ever read--the idea of love walking about in huge, ungainly clodhoppers is so counter-intuitive, but you make it work marvelously. The last six lines are equally magnificent. A wonderful, wonderful piece of writing.

i've examined this numerous times & the pureness wrapped in wisdom covers all the avenues of your introspective wanderings. a limpidness ingenious journey . . .

oh, Phibby. The boots and the hope chest are all images that I can identify with. . . the lying eyes, well, who can't identify with that, too. This is wonderfully written.
