Only A Wave

Only A Wave

A Poem by Phibby Venable

Only A Wave

I am the evening curve of odd months
that seek the length of time & tallies
in barter houses for good days
My eyes fly open, as quickly as a seal,
a small seal captured by a view of ice,
blue & sleek, as faraway as the longing
for love at a distance.
I am a souvenir brought back
from my ancestors after the first hunt
There is a celebration inside me
that hovers in an animal skin, that launches
friendly whistles & heated desire
On some days wild dogs drag me
into a temple in town
They leave me in a sacred grave yard
to explore the grounds
A forgetful monk hypnotizes my eyes
of chicory & licorices
A black cat crosses himself in passing
In the distance a twirl of angels
offer advice on wing expansion
A peacock clucks of vanity & preens
into a  lovely white pond
My feet squash wine into water
and it is a simple feat.
Even God credits its freshness.
He says it is a partisan well
in the land of new drunkards.
