All Night I Slept

All Night I Slept

A Poem by Phibby Venable

All Night I Slept

All night I slept with my neck broken
into the crook of your arm
nude with solitude & damp with fatique
I saw the big and little dipper
spoon stars into the darkness
through the open window on the top floor
In the early hours I heard the rain
in a metal downpour
and I stood for a moment
in the blustering drumbeat
No stars, no sun, just a clean awakening,
a steady sequence of gray lines
much like the ones I had drawn
in my mind
about misgivings & giving in,
about sleeping in stars & awakening
 and walking
and rain.

I do like to walk and think...and in the rain even moreso...I loved this part;"I saw the big and little dipper

spoon stars into the darkness

through the open window on the top floor

In the early hours I heard the rain

in a metal downpour

and I stood for a moment

in the blustering drumbeat

No stars, no sun, just a clean awakening"

I must say, this is the most impressive quality of work i've encountered on here so far. My only suggestion might be a title that opens up the piece further. But that's debatable. It's got a nice rhythm, strong imagery, imaginative words and juxtapositions. Consider getting it published. The end is delectable.

What kortas said and so much more! Your words always seem to be flights of sheer perfection. Knowing that life isn't always beautiful, of course.

Exhibit A of why it's such a pleasure to keep coming back here again and again--the slightly off-kilter yet perfectly descriptive imagery, the visual nature of the piece, the nonpareil craftsmanship. A fine, fine piece.
