come dance with me

come dance with me

A Poem by Phibby Venable

Come Dance With Me

Come dance with me in your long black coat
O' city cowboy of the dark
of tar & black & hope & dark
I'll carry your music on my back
& wedge in angles past the dusk
and be transparent where a touch
is for closed eyes & nothingness
Around the stools of seated hearts
again & again an arm will drop
Fine figured strangers, everyone
with fresh Spring mouths & lethal guns
The words are all too low to hear
I carry your music in my hands
I search for you in mirrored walls
& try to keep your voice afloat
You sing a song across the room
an echo blonde sings back to you
with every word a man might like
with shrewd appraisal of your heart
I put my hands across your eyes
but you are staring mesmerized
and all the clean love that you meant
to give in faith & sacrament,
becomes the stained cloth from the bar
they use to wipe the tables clear.

It's witty with an edge. The narrative flows wonderfully, perfectly, and the images--e.g."fresh Spring mouths & lethal guns", the full load of the four final lines-- are expert and freshly drawn. A wonderful, wonderful piece.
