some days I balance

Some days I remember who I am
and shove my boat forward
to linger in a drawn out curve...
in the river where I grow small
and check myself for word wounds
that swim after me biting
the hand I hang outside the boat

Some days I gather paper hearts
Paint them red & leave them
on the snowbank for cardinals
Some of the wiser birds read
through the invisible ink
and perch like sentinels
outside my window

On the days I cannot be
a boatsman or gatherer
I work in a diligent way
Then walk in the streetlights
of a circular cul de sac
Knowing I will be certain
of finding my way back
