Remarks On Something Beautiful

Remarks On Something Beautiful

A Poem by Phibby Venable

you find a word and drop the vowel
an o couplet comes rolling out
O' eloquence, O' Elixir
no need to hide beneath the chair
demure the molecules of sound

there was a comely harbinger
incipient, with a fairy's hair
arrived, a gossamer so fine
I took her thoughts & made them mine

this is for you, my lovely girl
who had such passion for the world
halcyon darling, sweetest heart -
a manuscript for what was not
available, here in this place

A musical lilt & morning breaks
mellifluous, an angel's gait
offing lips that knew the sea
the summery touch of secret wish
something beautiful and yet
scintilla longings chewed my lips
who could protect such innocence

Phibby, your use of images and vocabulary and thought fragments to tell a story, is second to none; here, your words to me fall into place like a masterpiece in watercolor... a splash of light here, some shadow there, some rain here, sunlight there. And the picture that forms before my eyes is [perhaps wrongly] that of a strong-willed girl standing on the edge od womanhood. And she is every girl who has ever longed to carry her innocence and wonder as a banner of pride into adulthood... something that so few of them ever succeed at doing. The effect is bittersweet and as fleeting as our own childhoods. Masterful.

thank you so much, Michael, for such a fine comment
i used to know a poet who wrote about the hills and mountains, her words felt like home to me

now she is a poet for the entire world, she knows the seas and valleys, the far reaches, all the beautiful places, she is vast and wise
