January Shakedown

January Shakedown

A Poem by Phibby Venable

This year was a black snake river
I waded in hips boots. Morning kept whispering,
birds in brownish longing
sang soft and far away
women rode to town waving goodbye
& shouting invitations backwards
I was a plain bank watching water
press my legs away

Each day I dusted the calendar
 and collected my luggage
A Congo man beat drums in my heart
and I danced the intensity of blue
A thousand factories arrived in my mailbox

A lone horse trotted by the window
Hello, I shouted, but my hand
trembled with the weight of optimism
and the prod of solitude

But this is Happy New year,
an emphasis
for happy! for new!
For all the kaleidoscopes
twisting magic in this hopeful mountain
I send the colors to you.

Out with the old, in with the new... A very inspirational way to ring in the new year.
