The Fawn

The Fawn

A Poem by Pete Langley
"

A person, an idea, a poem?

"

                              Like holes in wire netting,

                              the mist shrouding the fawn

                              in the glade

                              is clearing.

I start to see you as you really are,

                              but to tell you

would be to watch you leave.

                              While you move subtly

                              to cover when exposed,

                              the mesh is still strong,

                              still connected

                              Sometimes, though,

                              if I move position,

                              I glimpse your flank,

                              though changing my place

                              in your scene

                              reveals  the weakness

                              of my space

                              in your matrix.

                              My reflex must be sharp

                              as your eye

                              or you will be gone.

I can still see the spots and the red hairs holding that flicking tail, not ten feet away, and forty years ago.

I hope you were armed with binoculars, Don....but if not, I hope the meat tasted good! P.

The buck tasted almost like beef. The fawn lives in memory, so well I missed the metaphor.
you capture a moment so well here...yes, the fawn...but much like some people who rarely show themselves...we get glimpses into them, but we have to catch all we can of them quickly, because in a blink of an eye, they are covering up again, darting away....
beautiful imagery in this, Pete.

You cracked it completely, mate. Good on yer! P.
There is a tangible stillness throughout this piece. I am always amazed how still deer can stand...like statues, and in order to enjoy them we must be as still (barely breathe) or they will bolt in an instant. They are beautiful and graceful creatures and I love the way you've painted this scene for the rest of us with your words.
