If I wasn't me

Another short poem.

If I wasn't me, 

who would I be? 

Maybe a pirate from the far sea, 

Or a knight from Glastonbury. 

If I wasn't me, 

who would I be? 

Maybe a fighter like Bruce Lee, 

or a star in your tv. 

If I wasn't me, 

who would I be? 

Maybe the beggar that you see, 

or a holy man praying for thee. 

If I wasn't me, 

who would I be? 

A bear taking honey from the bee. 

A woodcutter chopping down an old tree.

If I wasn't me, 

who would I be? 

A soldier with no mercy. 

A murderer that kills violently.

If I wasn't me, 

who would I be? 

A clown for mockery. 

An escort for company. 

If I wasn't me, 

who would I be? 

A child playing wild and free. 

An old man sipping tea. 

If I wasn't me, 

who would I be? 

The man that makes her happy, 

yes, I would be he. 

But since I am me, 

a poet under a small fee, 

oh powers, let me be, 

only if to write poetry.

I think you should be a poet with a big smile for her!! that is you!! I like all the different possibilities for you to characterize yourself... the what if syndrome.... and many of us often like to think in different roles...it's creative and fun.... enjoyed the read..

In high school I once had to give an impromptu speech (why I will never understand, that's not a necessarily important skill but I digress) on a very similar topic. You did it far better than I did and it even rhymed. It is fun to think of all the different things we could be if we weren't who we are and how we would have ended up there. Sometimes your entire life would be rewritten and other times, it could just be a small decision that gets changed. It's also a nice reminder to appreciate the you who you are, especially as a writer because so much of what we do is impacted by everything that came before.

interesting write from the perspective that I never thought about a person wanting to be a poet. Odd that I wouldn't because I am very familiar with artist who wanted desperately to be painters. Yet I watched a really good movie recently about Keats and it is obvious he would rather die than not succeed as a poet. Your work and your last stanza show a desire and skill that speak well of accomplishing your goal. something in your structure and easy flow makes me think of Dickenson- love her work -carl
