I remember asking for permission to leave class or miss a few days.. and i was always afraid to d o so; but actually teachers are not monsters and much of the time they understand for a good enough reason...I like the way you structured this poem, very clever with the chorus pf he class participating...

The class were on the final BTEC year (Year 4) They all worked on the nearby nuclear power station and had stayed in the same group form year 1
They knew that I had been a racing cyclist and had turned to fell walking - a couple of them were Mountain Rescue volunteers.
Obivously they knew what he was going for and that I wouldnt stop him without reason (say for a final national exam) - They also knew my sis wad on the GB athletics team > well some one with my surname was on TV in athletics events - is she your wife they asked.

I like the thought of this actually happening and maybe it has, maybe more than once. Permission to be absent from school, friends would know about trials, etc. Perhaps the teacher is Head of school. Of course he would need a letter from parents plus proof. But, no lad would want to NOT tell what is more than likely his proudest moment!

Yes > it did happen like that
The lad in question was like that > it was to be his last Junior game before becoming an adult player

They were Process Control Instrumentation apprentices from the nuclear power station and research group.
He had to ask permission from the training officer.

I was teaching them the measuring devices (my trade) Also they knew that I had been a racing cyclist & my sis was a UK team member (sprints & hurdles)

No wonder the event was so special! My birth family was a sporting family. Two brothers more than keen rugby players, two sisters and I keen swimmers! Every move within a sport was special. Many thanks for such an interesting explanation..

Dad was a Leeds United pro (cut off by WWII)
One sis a sprinter the other a thrower (discus > javelin & pole vaulter (girls didn't do pole vaulting then))
I was a cyclist , cross country runner (from age 11) I had to do all my own maintenance

Busy family.. as many can be. Would love to have been a pole vaulter.. what art and skill is involved in that, But at 5.3 would have let go and flown out of the stadium, never to be seen again . :)
