One Special NightA Poem by Arthur MaurerThe inspiration for this was my graduation ceremony...The procession begins with a bittersweet tune Tears drop like the dew of the morning grass Poised smiles spread like fire on gasoline
Tradition, they boast, sits warmly on their shoulders A legacy from this tree branch I'll one day be One day I'll be another star shining brightly, A testament to the benevolence of my benefactors Oh, the places I'll go, the places I'll see, And I'll be yet another cornerstone to society
Solemnly a sermon is delivered As lamentations drip from the ceiling Guilt slithering its way through the pews
Vanity rests on their ill-exposed knees Gowns wrapped around that the progenitors of old did wear Tradition, they say, does guide the gravity of this ceremony And it's confirmed with the stampede of hands And the cornerstones garnished in matching cloth, Making their way humbly to the marble-stained altar
With a wave of the hand so the past is waived And barbaric memories thrown into the pyre For all are one striving toward the same destiny
Those who engendered us we'll make infinitely proud Deceit interposes itself between clenched teeth A legend, a true exemplar to the God-given tradition, Stands steadfast before curious, wondrous eyes A spell of inspiration cast by magical lips Befalls the reminiscent air of the statuesque crowd
This night will remain engraved forever in our memories, Remembered fondly and in times of desperation As we push our way forward on God's blessed path
Well, I do beg your wise, God-bestowed pardon, But I, I must humbly disagree. © 2010 Arthur Maurer |
