The Birth of FlightA Story by PeeeterRead to find out :PThe Birth of Flight It was summer, and the 36th day in our research, a special day. My wife and I have surveyed the Black Mountain Reach every summer each year to witness the birth of something spectacular, the birth of flight. The rare black tailed eagle would step out of its cave-nest only during the summer as the vegetation flourished with fruits and berries abundant, lizards motionless on open rocks and fish near the river’s surface which made all easy for the enormous predator birds. I remembered watching an enormous black tail surveying its domain in the skies above with its great black wings spanned wide and prey clutched tightly by its two powerful talons. Although this was my favourite sighting of these magnificent creatures, nothing compared to the life of a matured black tailed eagle chick. It was during the 36th day that we witnessed the first sightings of flight as we peer through our binoculars from afar. Every morning the chick, we named Ezio, would step out of its nest and screech into the open, however, today was different. Ezio’s coat of feathers we’re darker in rich black and its tail more noticeable ever so slightly unlike the mother’s. Also, Ezio’s beak was noticeably more sharper and curved, and had also grew larger black talons like hooks. Both essentials and perfect tools for predator birds to hunt. It was almost sundown which was the black bird’s favourite time to hunt with its black feathers like a camouflage granting stealth to the birds. I woke my wife and rushed her to quickly come and look at what we’ve been waiting for. We both glared through our binoculars and waited eagerly. Once a full grown chick had grown its full-black feathers and tail, the mother would disown her child removing it from her next for it to fend on its own. Sounds simple enough, however, black tail eagles would only nest high among the cliff’s surfaces 100 feet up away from other predators. Ezio jumped towards the edge of the cliff and with one last screech, dived down the surface towards the river below with wings wide and eyes focused. As the altitude further decreased closer down into the river, Ezio was still as if frozen by fear. I heard my wife gasp as we lost sight of Ezio behind the lush forest of silver pine trees. We waited patiently for any sign of movement, however, there was nothing. There was an eerie silence for five minutes. Suddenly we heard the sound of a familiar screech from the nearby river, which turned into the sound of wings. Ezio flew up high with a small fish between its talons. As Ezio flew up, it positioned it wings and soared through the skies gracefully, if not, proud. Ezio climbed higher along with a loud screech as it circled the area around us. Its flight was elegant and beautiful, like a feather caught in a gentle breeze. My wife and I watched in awe as this was the birth of Ezio’s new life and its birth of flight. © 2012 PeeeterAuthor's Note
