Memories of ValorA Poem by PenningtonMemories of Valor a poem by William Pennington
In bright and broiling light i came To walk upon my field again Although at home it lacked of might And so I came again at night
As I walked the field with light receding my mind return to years preceding, those of my putrid business life to times of greatest turmoil and strife
These years at home for once i was to die i would for glory's cause I'd give my life, or would've that day so forever here my memory would stay
the miry clay my senses hone the nosises chill me to the bone I heard them now the crowd is cheering and at the coach a drunk is jeering
the sounds are strong but yet the smells, of even stronger stories tell the sweat the grass the blood the tears and they stayed here still through all the years
I know my time will soon be past and to my grave I'll go at last but to this field once I shall return to recall this life my soul does yearn
And as i venture past the grave i know this field my soul did save my legs are weak my body frail the bleachers shine a ghostly pale
the stands the lights the names have changed but still the field remains the same and as a tear swells in my eye I lay myself down here to die
No greater honor than this God's plan To take my life where it began to restore to me in all their power my dearest memories of strife and valor © 2008 PenningtonAuthor's Note
