Two Ways

Two Ways

A Poem by Adam Light
"

I had been drifting into a funk for weeks, but one morning, upon waking up, I spontaneously decided to switch to a positive mode of being.

"
The buzzing, black alarm clock,
with its dream-destroying red eyes,
asserts that I must wake up now,
and out of my warm bed, rise.

I sit up, bitter and resentful,
but as my bare feet hit the floor,
I decide that today will not be
like the day I lived before.

I know that there are two ways
in which I confront the world.
Life's weights are dragged as burdens,
or for greater strength, they're curled.

I can choose to strengthen
every single thing I love,
and I can do it any moment
by just lifting from above.

I've been strong before,
and I think I can recall,
That back when I was happier
I didn't drag at all.
