Barely Here (Excerpt)

Barely Here (Excerpt)

A Story by Crescence
"

Jaybird and Lynn's confrontation, and, sadly, the last time they meet again.

"

"Lynn."

Her voice was so unexpected, I spun out my knife, ready to strike. I almost forgot she was even here.

I even forgot she knew about my secret.

Damn her. I hated how she came in when my life was falling apart. I hated how she tries to act like she cares when I have the only family I ever knew trying to kill me.

"You can't be going."

"I have to, Jay. Cole's waiting for me, we're going to run away, and we're going to save his family, even if it kills me." The words suprised me as I spoke.

"Lynn, I don't care if you love the vampire, you don't have to die for him."

"It's not your problem, Jay."

"It is if it involves you."

"Then just forget me. It's easier that way."

"You think I want to?"

Her voice was calm, which is what was scaring me. Usually, her voice is calm when she has her mind set on something.

"With the way you're acting, I'd think so, yes."

"Oh. Sure. I'll forget you in a snap. I'll forget you, and I'll go back to bed,  I'll wake up and go to my pointless high school ,then come home and eat dinner with my pointless family. And that will go on until I marry my pointless husband, and live the rest of my crappy, pointless life.

But Lynn is destined for greatness. Lynn deserves to be with better people. Smarter people. Prettier people. Not us."

"What's wrong with you, Jaybird?"

"What's wrong is that I miss my friend!"

It was suprising. She never mentioned anything since I last saw her. Then again, I haven't seen her since November. It's January, now. I didn't think she would be angry about it.

"What do you expect me to do, Jay? Leave them all there and pretend they never existed?"

"Well, that's what you did with me, didn't you? While you're off with all your happy vampire friends, I'm stuck here in a living hell! Do I at least have a pretty replacement? "

Suddenly, Alyssa came to mind. They had the same laugh, the same calmness like a river, only Alyssa was pale. It sent shudders down my spine. She was right.

"... You weren't even going to tell me you were leaving, were you."

She said it as if it were a statement, not a question.  And she was right about that, too. Boy, I felt like a real jerk.

" Well let me tell you this, Lynn. You're not going to die tonight, so stop lying to yourself. You're too important for that. Enjoy your adventure. Enjoy your family.

I'm going to disappear from your life- " She snapped her fingers- "Just like that."

Just like that, Jay, my closest, human friend, walked out of my house and out of the story.

It felt worse than death.

I was trying to focus on the dialouge, so the actual feelings of Lynn are a little unworked on.
