On The Censorship of the '50 Shades of Gray' movieA Chapter by Aram AlexanderAs you probably already know, the '50 Shades' trilogy is the so-called "mommy porn" book series that has recently been adapted for the big screen. In Dubai it is being heavily censored. Begin rant. While I have a passionate loathing -bordering on hatred- for the '50 Shades' trilogy (but this is a rant for another day), I believe it absolutely should be screened in Dubai as well as any other virtually self-proclaimed bastions of modernity. The argument that it is 'for the protection of minors' is rendered obsolete; this is the digital age, all it takes is three letters typed into a search engine, and your precious little angels are going to get an eye-full of the birds and the bees in glorious HD. Furthermore, if the authorities are so concerned with minors watching this movie in cinemas across the Emirates then either there must be something amiss with the norms of parental supervision at large, or perhaps the movie theatres in question should review and amend their policy on age verification upon purchasing tickets for movies intended for a mature audience. Filters f**k with the purity of expression in ones' writing; whether it be a book, movie script, or song, it disrupts the continuous narrative of the story being told in any medium, and it detracts from the emotional bond that the audience forms with the characters they watch or listen to or read about. Censorship is such an incredibly childish reaction, as if to say "that which you have imagined and brought to life is too morally offensive, of such a 'low' nature that rather than deal with it as an adult -and allowing other adults the same courtesy- I am going to destroy that which you have created simply because I personally dislike your vision and I do not think anybody should be allowed to disagree with me." Censorship is tyranny, and I detest either in all forms.
