It saddens me that the hardened scars of wounds inflicted by serrated words in the past are the only things protecting me from those same words today.
It saddens me to think that we must experience pain and suffering and humiliation and regret brought on by words as sharp as knives when we are still children. 
It saddens me that only then do we become accustomed to the cruelty of maliciously spoken words, and only then do we learn to live with these painful cuts and gashes before time eventually heals them and turns them, and us, into hardened scars.

It shouldn't have to be this way.
